With the 992 generation of the GT3 and GT3RS, the oiling system on the MA2.75 engines typically only drain about half the total oil per oil change. Because of this, we generally do recommend more frequent oil changes as the percentage of old oil in the system is higher than in previous applications. In our opinion, the servicing of this engine perhaps was not fully thought out by Porsche, for example:
- Sump Plugs: Earlier engines (2022/2023 cars) used the metal sump plug ( 9GT-115-647-B) which occasionally would take the brass insert out with it and subsequently would need intensive repairs and dropping the engine to address. This was not an issue on the 991 cars with the MA1 engines. Later on they did realize the plastic plug would avoid this issue and the tank was redesigned for a plug that wouldn't seize/strip so easily
- C40GT Oil: Similarly with the drain plug redesign, early cars were spec'ed with regular C40 oil (Mobil 1 ESP X3) which is shared with cars like the 718 GT4/GTS 4.0. The C designated oils were designed to work with the newer emissions systems and particulate filters on those models, but when it came to the GT3's higher redline and loads they were finding this oil didn't offer the necessary protection for the engine demands. Engine replacements were not uncommon especially on early production 992 GT3 & GT3RS, so it was clear they didn't properly stress test the engine on the non-GT oil before launching it.
Perhaps the combination of the inferior (C40 non-GT) oil and the oil changes only getting about 50-60% of old oil out, and a 1 year/15000km interval, there was definitely some cause for concern among owners. While these vehicles are still mostly covered by warranty or factory extended warranties, those that are nearing the end of their warranty should take some precautions with their vehicle.
For these MA2 engines, we offer our clients the option for an overnight drain of the engine oil. This will remove more than 60% of the old oil out of the system and may help with longevity. The extra labour/shop charges to drain overnight are minimal, so if you're comfortable leaving the car a bit longer this is something you could consider. In our testing with the MA2 engines, we found:
- 30 minute drain uses about 4.3 to 4.5L of oil
- 16 hour drain uses about 5.7 to 5.9L of oil
- 24 hour drain uses about 6.2 to 6.3L of oil
The overnight drain from 6PM the evening before till 10AM the morning after gets an extra 1L out of the system which works out pretty nicely. We had one GT3RS that was left on the hoist for 24 hours as we were working on brakes, tires, and other items and we found that an extra 8 hours only resulted in another 0.5L so the drain rate after the first 16 is extremely slow. With more frequent servicing intervals and longer drains, the oil will ultimately be in better condition and should offer better protection in turn.
