The W213 generation E63 AMG has a unique wheel setup where the front offset is quite a bit wider than the rear. Thus making it notoriously hard to find winter wheel fitments. The Factory tires are a 265/35R20 and 295/30R20 stagger but tires alone will set you back around $2500 (CAD) with installation. Mercedes doesn't sell a winter wheel and tire package for this car.
For this customer we built a custom wheel and tire package with 19" wheels and a square 265/40R19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 4. This tire will be more comfortable and handle rougher winter roads significantly better than the stock 30 series rear tire.
The M06MB wheel design we chose still offers ample brake clearance for the big red AMG brakes. It's a replica of the AMG wheel found on the famous 507 model C63 of the W204 generation but we think it looks quite fitting on this newer W213 E Class as well. We went with all black hardware and a spacer on the front to even out the wheel fitment.
We always prefer a winter wheel and tire package as this has a number of benefits.
- Ability to do seasonal changeovers at home: Mounting tires only requires highly specialized and expensive equipment but a wheel swap is easy enough for most to DIY.
- Long term labour expenses: Mounting tires (especially 20" tires) will cost upwards of $150 twice a year, whereas wheel swaps typically cost less than half that. So over a typical 4-5 year ownership of the car, you're likely saving $500-1000
- Having a spare wheel/tire: Most new vehicles do not come with spare tires, should your car encounter a non repairable puncture, you can swap on your winters (or summers) easily and have a spare to run on while you wait for a replacement.
- Resale value: Used tires do not hold much resale value but a wheel and tire package tends to be easier to sell
