When shopping for a new double din system, most consumers are familiar with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it's important to note other features included by manufacturers as well. While CarPlay and Android Auto are incredibly convenient, they are very limited in terms of the apps that you can actually use through these systems. Many new cars come with web enabled services such as BMW's ConnectedDrive which have a much larger selection of vehicle-optimized apps such as Yelp, Twitter, and other news and audio programs.
With iOS 10 and iOS 11 for example, iPhone users are not able to use the popular community based navigation app, Waze. This might require the driver to rely on accessing the app through their smartphone screen instead which defeats the purpose of CarPlay for many users.
Kenwood/JVC WebLink
The new WebLink feature adds native support of popular apps like Waze, YouTube, Yelp, and Weather. These apps are optimized for the head unit and driving experience and deliver more content to the occupants of the vehicle in a more streamlined fashion. These apps are accessed via USB and software available on Google Play and Apple's App Store. Certain new models from JVC and Kenwood also feature wireless Android Auto which also adds wireless WebLink compatibility
