The Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX is proving to be one of the most exciting car audio products for the Summer of 2018. This flagship double din system comes fully loaded with just about every feature except for built-in GPS navigation. Although for many users, the navigation features available through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are usually sufficient. Those that require GPS navigation and offline maps can opt for the AVIC-U280 module which adds HERE maps to the receiver.
When we say the AVH-W4400NEX is fully loaded and referred to as a "flagship device", here's what we mean:
- Built-in WiFi allowing for Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Miracast screen mirroring for compatible devices through WiFi
- Dual camera inputs (front and rear)
- HD Radio for improved AM and FM audio quality
- iDatalink Maestro input to retain steering wheel controls, factory amp control, performance gauges, and much more!
- 7" WVGA display and variable colour illumination
- CD, DVD, SD, and dual USB playback; HDMI input
- 3 pairs of 4V RCA preouts
Not only are you getting excellent sound out of the AVH-W4400NEX but the convenience of Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto takes the functionality much further. At this moment and price point, there's no other device offering these features and DVD playback, so it's amazing to see a market leader like Pioneer release such an innovative product.
AVH-W4400NEX vs. iLX-107
Alpine's iLX-107 was a popular device last year as it offered Wireless Apple CarPlay, however, when compared to the new AVH-W4400NEX, the Pioneer emerges on top. For starters, the Alpine unit does not support Android Auto at all (wired or wireless), which eliminates a large portion of the market. The Alpine is also a mechless receiver, meaning it can't play CDs or DVDs. We do like the fact that the iLX-107 has a capacitive screen as the response will typically better than the resistive types, however it can be an issue if you are wearing gloves in the winter.
In terms of connectivity, the Pioneer also leads with more USB, camera, and AV inputs. The higher voltage amp pre-outs on the AVH-W4400NEX are great if you are planning further audio upgrades. In terms of price point, we think that the added features on the AVH-W4400NEX are well worth the $50-$100 premium.
