This 2015 Subaru WRX came for us for a new head unit as the factory CD player was having bluetooth connection issues. This particular car had a factory backup camera which uses the digital info screen above the center fan vents as the display. This camera system works even after the factory head unit is removed.
For this car, we went with the Pioneer DMH-2660NEX, Pioneer's latest mechless double-din Apple CarPlay and Android head unit. It has a beautiful capacitive touchscreen and a single USB input which is used for CarPlay/Android but can also be used for media playback. Our customer wanted to be able to play movies for his children in the back seat via this USB so we paired it with the PAC TR1 bypass module.
We ran the USB port in the compartment in front of the shifter for easy access. While retention harnesses for the factory USB are available, we've found that this generation Subaru USB is not fast enough to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
